The best supercars of the 70s: Top 5 ranking of the best vintage cars

Top 5 rating of the best supercars of the 70s

1. 1974 Lamborghini Countach - the best Lamborghini supercar of the 70s

The Lamborghini Countach, produced from 1974 to 1990, is the epitome of a sports car created by Lamborghini specialists. Launched after Ferruccio Lamborghini sold the company to new owners, the Countach was designed by Marcello Gandini of the Bartone design studio, the same studio that created the Lamborghini Miura P400. https://maseratinet.com/lamborghini/miura-p400

The first generation of the Lamborghini Countach, the LP 400, is powered by a four-liter V12 engine located longitudinally, as the acronym LP (Longitudinale Posteriore) suggests. This engine delivers 375 hp, a top speed of 309 km/h and the ability to accelerate to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, underscoring the impressive dynamic performance of the car along with its outstanding appearance.

The Lamborghini Countach's aggressive, angular design, iconic scissor doors, rear-wheel drive and 5-speed manual transmission provide an authentic driving experience typical of the super sports cars of the 1970s.
Marcello Gandini, who drew this car, undoubtedly created not only a beautiful design, but also a car that leaves an unforgettable impression from the first moment the engine is started.

Today, Lamborghini Countach models, especially the early versions of the LP 400, are still very popular thanks to their unique styling without large wings and rear spoilers, as well as their limited production - only 151 examples were built from 1974 to 1978.

2. 1971 Maserati Bora - the best Maserati supercar of the 70s

In 1971, the Maserati Bora, Maserati's first wedge-shaped supercar, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign, was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. When Citroen acquired Maserati in 1968, the Modenese company was given the necessary budget to produce this centrally-engined GT car. The Maserati Bora featured unique design elements such as a brushed stainless steel roof, retractable headlights, and a rectangular hood ventilation panel on later models.

The Maserati Bora supercar was equipped with an independent double wishbone suspension, a modern Citroen hydraulic system including rack and pinion steering, four-wheel disc brakes, a single disc clutch and an adjustable pedal box.

At the heart of the Maserati Bora was a powerful twin overhead cam hemi-V8 engine developed by Maserati specifically for racing. The 4.7 and 4.9 liter engines could develop over 300 horsepower, accelerate the car to 168 miles per hour and 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds.

Giorgetto Giugiaro created a design that complemented the GT's understated but purposeful styling without being overly aggressive, with an architecture that featured refined touches such as a polished stainless steel roof.

3. 1971 De Tomaso Pantera - the best De Tomaso supercar of the 70s

The De Tomaso Pantera, launched in 1971, is a mid-engined supercar with Italian-American roots. It was designed by American designer Tom Tjaarda and featured a centrally-mounted Ford V8 engine and an Italian-made steel monocoque chassis. The Pantera, which replaced the De Tomaso Mangusta, was a collaboration with Ford and was intended for the American market.

This model used an integrated steel architecture, which allowed easier mass production and provided greater rigidity. The De Tomaso Pantera was the most mass-produced De Tomaso, with 7,260 units produced in two series from 1971 to 1993.

A feature of the De Tomaso Pantera was the use of reliable American V8 engines, which made it much cheaper to maintain and run than its counterparts with more exotic engines. The model was equipped with a ZF 5-speed gearbox and many components from major car manufacturers. The Pantera was also the first De Tomaso model to have air conditioning and electric windows as standard, and was powered by a 5769 cc, 330 bhp engine.

4. 1973 Ferrari 365 GT/4 BB - the best Ferrari supercar of the 70s

In 1971, at the Turin Motor Show, Ferrari unveiled its new Maserati 365 series car, the Ferrari 365 GT/4 BB, on the Pininfarina stand. This car was distinguished by the fact that its 4.4-litre 12-cylinder V12 engine was located behind the passengers, rather than under the long bonnet as in previous models. This engine was derived from Formula 1 engines and was named to reflect its power: 365 cubic centimetres per cylinder and four overhead camshafts.

The central location of the engine was a significant design change, as it marked the end of the era of Ferrari's front-engined high performance cars. The new Ferrari 365 GT/4 BB accelerated to 62 mph in 5.4 seconds and had a top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph), making it one of the fastest production cars in the world at the time of its creation.

Although the name of the engine suggested an opposed engine, it was actually a flat V-type with the connecting rods arranged at a 180° angle. This is a typical design for V-type engines, where the connecting rods are mounted in pairs on the same support, as opposed to opposed engines where each connecting rod has its own support. In this engine, the two opposing pistons move synchronously, which distinguishes it from a true opposed engine where the pistons move closer and further apart in an antagonistic motion.

The Ferrari 365 GT/4 BB was the first model in the BB series and is the rarest, with only 387 examples having been produced.

5. 1966-1973 Lamborghini Miura - the best Lamborghini supercar of the 70s

The Lamborghini Miura was produced in three main series during its history from 1966 to 1973: starting with the P400 model, which lasted from 1966 to 1969, then the P400 S (1969-1971) and ending with the P400 SV (1971-1973). The first P400 model was equipped with a 350 bhp engine, the second with 370 bhp and the third with 385 bhp. The P400 S model had additional features such as electric windows and air conditioning. The last P400 SV series had wider rear tyres, no "eyelashes" around the headlights and a self-locking differential on the last 96 examples.

This supercar from Italy's Lamborghini has become an iconic car thanks to its centrally located V12 engine and magnificent body design. The world's first production car with such speed, the Miura accelerated to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.7 seconds and had a top speed of 280 km/h (155 mph). This car set new standards in the world of sports supercars.

During its production run, 475 units of the Lamborghini Miura were built and it quickly gained popularity due to its revolutionary design and spectacular 350 CV 'eyelashes'.
