Designed by Pininfarina and manufactured by Scaglietti, the car remained faithful to the V8 of its predecessor, the 308 GT4, but with the addition of dry lubrication for better cooling and engine placement. The body was initially made entirely of fiberglass before being replaced with steel in June 1977, adding 150 kg to the car's weight.
The V8 engine of the Ferrari 308 GTB/GTS was equipped with four Weber 40DCNF carburetors, two throttle bodies and one ignition coil. Of the versions of the car, the European version had 255 hp at 6,600 rpm and the American version had 240 hp at the same rpm, limited by emission control systems. Cars for the Australian, Japanese and American markets had wet crankcases from the GT4 as standard.
Standard options included 14-inch alloy wheels and later 16-inch wheels, a sports exhaust system, Borgo high compression pistons, a P6 high-lift camshaft and a deep front spoiler as part of the "Sprintpack" package.
