The Maserati 450S, a racing car created by Maserati to compete in the FIA World Sportscar Championship, was launched in 1957 at the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires. A total of nine Maserati 450S were produced.

The project, codenamed Tipo 54, began in 1954 under the direction of Vittorio Bellentani and Guido Taddeucci. Their aim was to create a car with a larger engine than was usually used in Maserati.

The engine produced 400 bhp (300 kW) at 7200 rpm and featured twin overhead camshafts with a cylinder diameter and stroke of 93.8 mm x 81 mm.

Work on this complex engine began in 1954, but early tests revealed problems with vibration and frequent exhaust manifold failures. In 1956 an improved engine was fitted to the 3501 chassis. This chassis was originally designed for the 350S to accommodate the 3.5 litre 6 cylinder in-line four engine, but after a serious accident involving Stirling Moss in the 1956 Mille Miglia, the chassis was redesigned and used for the first Maserati 450S.

Between 1956 and 1962, the Maserati 450S took part in 119 races around the world, winning 31 of them. This Maserati model was presented at the 1957 World Championship. However, after all the 450S that took part in the championship crashed, Maserati faced financial difficulties and was forced to stop using these cars in competitions.

The end of the Maserati 450S's racing career was caused by the new rules of the World Sportscar Championship, which limited the maximum engine capacity to 3 litres, making it impossible to continue using the 4.5-litre Maserati 450S engine in official competition.
