Design
students to display Maserati concept in Geneva

Looks like we're getting another Italian concept car at the Geneva
Motor Show this March, as design students at Italian-based Istituto
Europeo di Design (IED) will be unveiling a concept of their own
for Maserati. Dubbed the Maserati Chicane, the full-scale model represents
a 2+2 rear-wheel drive coupe, with a front-mounted V8 engine. The
concept is said to be smaller than the current production Maserati
Gran Turismo, and is designed as an entry-level model for the Italian
sports/luxury automaker's lineup.
Based on the phrase "emotion at first sight," the Maserati
Chicane concept was conceived by students Dmytro Zubayairov and Oscar
Palladino and chosen from 17 original entries to be displayed at
Geneva. Among the jury members deciding the winner, were Maserati
Chief Designer Allessandro Dambrosio and Cesar Mendoza, the Turin
IED director. IED is a prestigious European design school with numerous
campuses in Italy.
The Maserati Chicane will be joined by a video presentation of the
Maserati Sfida, a virtual concept designed as a two-door wagon. We'll
be in Geneva this March bringing you live updates from the show floor,
so keep it tuned to Motor Trend Online for all the latest concept
car news, photos, and information.
Maserati Chicane swerves into Geneva

Maserati has no new models planned for the forthcoming Geneva motor
show, but it will have one of the prettiest concepts on display,
the Chicane.
The work of Turin-based styling group IED, the Chicane is a concept
of a baby Maserati. It uses elements of Quattroporte, GranTurismo
and some of the marque's classic models. The V8-engined car is 4.4m
long and 1.85m wide; that's some 40cm shorter than the GranTurismo,
but roughly the same width. There's more than a hint of Birdcage,
meanwhile, about the concept's slatted front grille - and the firm's
trademark side vents appear to have been placed in the doors.
Maserati has given no indication that the Chicane, or any derivate
thereof, will make it into production. But should it decide to build
a baby car on the back of the forthcoming small Ferrari, there are
worst places where it could start...

A few masters-degree
design students from the European Institute of Design in Turin
have worked their magic for Maserati, who will unveil
their hard work at the Geneva Motor Show in early March. The Maserati
Chicane Concept is a 2+2 coupe and one size smaller than the Quattroporte
and Granturismo, spurring on rumours of a smaller Maserati. The Chicane
measures 4,400 mm in length, 1,850 mm width and 1,250 height.
The Maserati Chicane Concept will draw power from a V8 and directs
the torque onto the tarmac through the rear wheels. The Chicane is
the brainchild of Dmytro Zyubyairov (Ukraine) and Oscar Palladino
(Italy).
Alongside the Chicane, another student project will be shown through
a dedicated video. The Maserati Challenge was designed by a different
group of students and is a 2+1 shooting brake, a 2 door station wagon
with enough room in the back for bulky sports equipment.
Students
to Unveil Maserati Chicane Concept at Geneva Motor Show

Graduate
students at the Insituto Europeo di Design are set to unveil
the Maserati
Chicane
concept at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.
The Chicane is based on the 2+2 coupe (which could be the next entry-level
model), with a front-mounted V-8 and a rear-wheel-drive system.
The sporty concept is more compact than the Quattroporte and GranTurismo
production cars and sacrifices elegance for a sportier (mean?)
look. The concept features sharp lines and a pair of handsome recessed
headlights.
Also at the Maserati booth will be a second project car (in form
of virtual model), the Maserati Sfida. The Sfida is a 2+1 shooting
brake, a 2-door wagon aimed at young consumers.
The designs were selected from eight assigned projects. The students
worked under the supervision of Luca Borgogno (designer at Pininfarina)
and David Wilkie (design director at Stile Bertoneand) with the
support of Chief Designer at IED Automotive, Andrea Militello.

One of the more
stunning concept cars set to debut at March’s Geneva Motor Show won’t be the creation of
some overpaid and stuffy professional designer, instead it will be
the work of a group of students from Italy’s famed Istituto
Europeo di Design (IED). The new concept is the full-scale Maserati
Chicane coupe concept, a design which draws obvious cues from the
current GranTurismo but has a unique and modern look of its own.
This will be the fifth year in a row that students from IED will
be showcasing a new concept at Geneva, and sponsorship for the
project this came from the likes of Pirelli, Cecomp and OZ Racing.
The final
concept will stretch 4,400mm in length and is designed to feature
2+2 seating capacity and a front-mounted V8 engine.
Geneva may not be the last time we see the sultry lines of the
Chicane. Maserati is rumoured to be developing a new entry-level
sports coupe and we wouldn’t be surprised, nor disappointed,
if the new Maser looked a little something like this.
At
the Geneva Motor Show IED will unveil the Maserati Chicane, a 2+2
coupé concept
created by the students of the Master RSP in Transportation Design.

The Chicane
was created as a full-scale physical model by the students of IED's
fifth Master RSP in Transportation Design - work experience,
academic year 2006-2007.
The main goal of the Maserati Chicane project is to explore styling
themes for Maserati's future models. The Chicane has more compact
dimensions (4,400 mm long, 1,850 mm wide, 1250 mm tall, with a
wheelbase of 2,600 mm) compared to the Quattroporte and Grandturismo
production
cars.
The Chicane is based on a 2+2 coupe layout with a front-mounted
V8 engine coupled with a rear wheel-drive system. It could be an
entry-level
model that doesn't sacrifice the unique and distinctive features
of the brand.
The design process was guided by the idea of expressing "emotion
at first sight", which translated into a fascinating and high-impact
look, with a careful study of the surfaces and a research for pure
lines.
Chicane will be on display at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show together
with a second project called "Maserati Sfida", a pure virtual
model that will be visible in a dedicated video.
Targeted to young and dynamic customers, the Maserati Sfida is
a 2+1 shooting brake, a sporty 2-door wagon that features a special
rear volume and opening system that allows for easy access and
loading
of sports gear.
On its stand at Geneva, IED will also display three selected projects
from the 3rd year Course in Transportation Design 2006-2007, created
in partnership with Toyota: “Forma” by Marco Cerrato,
Enrico Remolif and Danilo Tosetti, “Waterfall” by Dennis
Braga and Andrea Mocellin and “H.A.L.O. Hybrid Advance Line
Over” by Michele Deconcini and Fabrizio Salerno.
RSP Master in Trasnportation Design - Final Projects
Starting from 17 individual entries, eight projects were selected
and assigned to groups of two/three students who created 1:4 scale
models.
The students have worked under the supervision of Luca Borgogno,
Designer at Pininfarina, e David Wilkie, Design Director at Stile
Bertoneand with the support of Andrea Militello, Chief Designer
IED Automotive.
The final selection was made by a Jury that included Lorenzo Ramaciotti,
Vice President Style Fiat Group Automobiles, Alessandro Dambrosio,
Chief Designer Maserati, César Mendoza, Director at the Turin
Istituto Europeo di Design, Giuliano Molineri, Frimark President,
and the Master coordinators.
The Maserati Chicane is based on the original concept by Dmytro
Zyubyairov (Ukraine) and Oscar Palladino (Italy), while the Maserati
Sfida is
based on an idea by Roberta Baggio Worm (Brazil), David Rodrigues
(Portugal) and Irma Elena Naya Ramirez (Venezuela).
The design team included: Vadim Artemiev (Russia), Roberta Baggio
Worm (Brazil), Gaurav Bhatia (India), Alex Chatham (USA), Aashish
Chaudhary (India), Gerard Fernandez Currell (Spain), Ron Desnoyers
(Canada), Gregorio Di Pinto (Italy), Mikael Ifianto (Indonesia),
Carlos Luzon Gracia (Spain), Irma Elena Naya Ramirez (Venezuela),
Emrah Onemli (Turkey), Oscar Palladino (Italy), Raffaele Ponsiani
(Italy), David Rodrigues (Portugal), Antonio Tamburrino (Italy)
e Dmytro Zyubyairov (Ukraine), Laurent Raphael (France), Mihaï Panaîtescu
(Romania). |
