Are you the owner of a Lucas Fuel Injected 3500 GTi Coupe, Vignale Spyder, Mistral or Sebring?

If so, you should be advised of the damage being caused by faulty Lucas injection metering units.

WEBER CONVERSION KIT

THE PROBLEM

The basic problem is gas leaking into the engine oil sump, thinning out the normal heavy (50W) oil, causing the bearings to fail. With the lack of spare parts available, rebuilding these injection units has become much more difficult.

THE SOLUTION

We have successfully converted all three of these models to Weber carburetors and, in all cases, the performance was as good as the injection systems. The conversion can be performed by the owner with a good quality metric tool set. No special tools are required.

It is my opinion that the value of your car will increase by at least the cost of converting to Webers, perhaps even more. Sooner or later, I believe most all cars will be converted. Quote by Mr. Aurelio Bertocchi, the former Managing Director of the Maserati Factory, Italy, regarding injection vs. Webers: "When you have a problem with the fuel injection, you stop you don't go. With the Webers, if you have a problem, each mechanic can adjust a little but you always go."

WEBER CONVERSION KIT INSTRUCTIONS

1.) Read these instructions before performing installation and always disconnect the battery. Better yet, remove the battery.

Note: Figure numbers are from the Mistral Parts Manual Table 3 or Table 43 of the 3500 Parts Manual.

2.) Review contents of kit:

  • 1 - Manifold with two water fittings and one vacuum fitting loosely installed, checked for flatness and pressure tested.
  • 3 - Air filter assemblies
  • 1 - Fuel pump
  • 1 - Fuel Regulator w/Filter bowl
  • 1 - Metering unit block off plate for cam cover
  • 1 - Linkage replacement rod
  • 3 - Throttle shaft needle bearings
  • 12 - (each) Carburetor mounting studs, nuts, and washers
  • 1 - (3- piece) fuel pipe set
  • 6 - Head to manifold gaskets
  • 6 - Manifold to Weber gaskets
  • 1 - (each) Instructions, core sheet, and Weber manual

    Note: Carburetors are sold separately

3.) Remove air filter box, connecting hose, and manifold induction box, figure numbers 55, 57-61.

4.) Disconnect vacuum lines, fuel enrichment cable and throttle linkage at the top of number 31.

5.) Remove metering unit and manifold, along with the injector fuel lines. Some injectors may need to be removed to obtain proper wrench clearance and throw.

6.) Loosen water and vacuum fittings before removing manifold nuts.

7.) Carefully remove from your injection manifold all of the throttle linkage, including bearings and linkage arms, figure numbers 19, 20, 31-40.

8.) Clean your new Weber manifold.

9.) Remove water and vacuum fittings and reinstall using a thread sealer or Teflon tape.

10.) Install carburetor mounting studs, use Loctite "Red".

11.) Install linkage and bearings. The bearing holes have been machined out for a proper fit. However, additional filing may be needed for perfect fit. Use a round file, being careful not to remove too much metal. If the hole is too tight the shaft may bind the bearing.

11.1.) Install cam cover block off plate.
