Photos -- Ghibli Spyder

Text and Photos by Francis G. Mandarano or courtesy of the MIE Collection.

It was only natural with the huge success of the coupe that Maserati would request Ghia to submit a design proposal for a spyder. First shown at the 1968 Turin Auto Show, the spyder version was a huge success. Commonly referred to as, "The most beautiful sports car ever built," its proportions and styling are absolutely stunning, even by today's standards. Approximately 124 Ghibli spyders were built, and of that number, approximately 40 were SS cars. A gorgeous fitted hard top was available, and approximately 25 cars left the factory with this hard top in place.

Maserati was known for its use of color.
