The 19th annual Belle Macchine d’Italia Concorso d’Eleganza

Lawrence Auriana's A6GCS; #2040

The 19th annual Le Belle Macchine d’Italia Concorso d’Eleganza and Driving Event was held June 24-27, 2005 in the scenic Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania. The weekend started with the Premier Financial welcome reception in the main lodge ballroom at the Skytop Lodge.

The Lodge is part of the 5500-acre luxurious and historic resort situated atop rolling evergreen mountains and overlooks Skytop Lake. Saturday’s Concorso d’Eleganza was held on the spectacular grounds of the Lodge. For a second year in a row we were treated to the Maserati Club International and Sports Car Market Historic Maserati Reunion held in conjunction with the Maserati Owners’ National Meet. Featured cars were 300S #3062, A6GCS #2040, and A6G/54GT Zagato #2122 brought by Lawrence Auriana of Connecticut; Birdcages Tipo 64 #1651 and Tipo 63 were brought by Frank Triarsi of Classic Coach of Elizabeth, New Jersey; and Birdcage Tipo 61 #2462 was brought by John Schumann of Vera Beach, Florida. Saturday night’s awards dinner speakers were Ehren Bragg, area manager of Lamborghini North America and Pierro Rivolta, automotive, nautical, and industrial designer. Jerry Kaye and Ruggero Fratarcangeli presented the awards at the ceremony following the dinner. Lawrence Auriana received the award for his A6GCS as the Best Maserati of the event. In addition to the featured classic and newer Maserati, there were spectacular displays of Lamborghini, Ferrari, Pantera, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Iso Rivolta, Bizzarini, and for the first time, a great representation in many years of classic Lancia. A 1934 Lancia brought by John Moir from Chocoroa, New Hampshire received the award for Best of Show. The car was French-designed and built and is a retractable hardtop convertible. It has an Eclipse body and was designed by Georges Paulin.

The event continued to the nearby Pocono International Raceway for two days of high-speed driving with professional instruction provided by SRE. The legendary Lamborghini test and development driver, Valentino Balboni, provided rides during the driving event on Sunday and Monday, going to speeds exceeding 150 mph, plus thrilling rides through the infield road course.

It was nice to see old friends and new members from all of the Italian marques. This event is the finest show for Italian car enthusiasts on the East Coast.
